UAS Juneau Gay Straight Alliance
"The University of Alaska Southeast Gay-Straight Alliance encourages our fellow students and community members to embrace their uniqueness, courage, and leadership potential; to promote wellness, to cultivate friendships, and to advocate for equal human rights."
Gay Straight Alliance
Both JD High school and Thunder Mountain High school, and the University of Alaska Southeast have GSAs. The Gay-Straight Alliance Network is a youth-led organization that connects school-based Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) to each other and community resources. Through peer support, leadership development, and training, GSA Network supports young people in starting, strengthening, and sustaining GSAs and builds the capacity of GSAs to:
- create safe environments in schools for students to support each other and learn about homophobia and other oppressions,
- educate the school community about homophobia, gender identity, and sexual orientation issues, and
- fight discrimination, harassment, and violence in schools.
These groups try to have weekly meetings, friendly students are welcome to participate.
